Sep 30: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is September 30, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) vetoed SB 1047, a highly-contested bill that would have regulated the most advanced AI models. Newsom criticized the legislation for not providing “a flexible, comprehensive solution” to catastrophic AI risks and announced plans to work on “responsible guardrails” for AI in the next legislative session. In Washington D.C., the Department of Commerce updated AI chip export rules, making it easier for U.S. companies to export chips to trusted buyers, which could include data centers in the Middle East. Lastly, competition regulators in Germany announced Microsoft will now be subject to enhanced antitrust scrutiny, in part due to the company’s AI offerings.
