Sep 3: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report
Driving The Day
Today is September 3, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In addition to passing a highly-contested bill that would broadly regulate the most advanced AI models, the California legislature passed AI-related legislation that would address deepfakes, a bill that would restrict unauthorized replicas of performers, and a bill that would amend “the California Consumer Privacy Act to include personal information” in AI systems, including models. A bill that would have addressed AI discrimination “in areas like housing, health care and employment” was pulled by its author before receiving a vote. In the Netherlands, data privacy regulators issued a fine of more than $33 million to Clearview AI, a facial recognition company based in the United States. Researchers writing in the MIT Technology Review argued “alarmist claims” over AI’s impact on the election “have been blown out of proportion” and are “distracting us from some deeper and longer-lasting threats to democracy.”
