Today is September 19, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, the Federal Trade Commission published a staff report accusing social media companies of engaging in “vast surveillance of consumers” and feeding user information into their AI systems. Meanwhile, Meta and several other companies signed an open letter declaring the European Union “risks falling further behind in the AI era due to inconsistent regulatory decision making.” Lastly, a U.N. advisory body released a report on global AI governance recommending a scientific panel on AI similar to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
