Today is September 12, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: Several AI leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, are meeting with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, and senior White House officials to discuss solutions to the high energy demand from AI. Meanwhile, the Hollywood actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, and the National Organization for Women called on Governor Gavin Newsom (D) to sign California SB 1047, a bill that would regulate the most advanced AI models, which is awaiting his signature. Down under, independent Australian politician David Pocock warned new misinformation legislation does not do enough to protect against “the growing threat of generative AI in” Australian elections. Lastly, more than 120 local and national news publishers urged Congress to pass legislation that would help them receive compensation when their content is used for AI applications.
