Today is October 17, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: U.S. federal prosecutors are increasing their efforts to catch suspects using AI “to manipulate or create child sex abuse images,” according to a Reuters report. In Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) announced the creation of an AI task force, which was called for by an executive order he signed earlier this year. Across the pond, financial regulators in the U.K. are establishing an AI lab to collaborate with experts and companies on the implementation of AI tools in the financial industry. Lastly, economist Daron Acemoglu, who won a Nobel Prize this month, argued in The New York Times for a “broad national strategy so that A.I. doesn’t only automate work and sideline workers, but creates new tasks and competencies for them.”
