Nov. 30: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is November 30, 2023, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, a bipartisan pair of U.S. senators introduced a bill that would prevent the Transportation Security Administration from using involuntary facial recognition technology in airports. In Oregon, Gov. Tina Kotek (D) announced an AI advisory council that will provide guidance on the state’s use of AI. In Europe, France’s Finance Minister called on Germany and other European states to “invest massively in AI so as not to depend on American technologies.”

In this issue:

  • Washington in Focus: The House Energy & Commerce Committee Chair argues a national data privacy standard is the first step in regulating the use of AI “in healthcare and beyond.”

  • Around the Nation: Some blue states are increasingly applying scrutiny on the use of AI by insurance companies.

  • Across the Pond: The European Commission launched a joint undertaking aimed at boosting the EU’s semiconductor industry.

  • Global Highlights: Think tank researchers argue China is building global AI ecosystems that give it the upper hand in setting international norms on AI tech.

  • Outside Views: The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas argues AI disruption could expose high-skilled workers to job disruption.
