Nov. 2: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is November 2, 2023, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: A bipartisan pair of U.S. senators introduced legislation that would require federal agencies to follow AI guidelines published earlier this year by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The Michigan House of Representatives passed legislation that would make it illegal to spread deceptive election media generated by AI. In London, the U.K. Safety Summit is in the books, and while the event focused mainly on the existential risks of AI, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and civil society representatives tried to broaden the meeting’s focus to the risks AI poses to daily life.

In this issue:

  • Washington in Focus: At the direction of President Biden, the Department of Commerce will establish a U.S. AI safety institute.

  • Around the Nation: The Georgia State Senate kicks off a deep dive into artificial intelligence.

  • Across the Pond: The U.K. will invest £300 million in supercomputing to make AI models safer.

  • Global Highlights: China issues guidelines for the development of humanoid robotics.

  • Outside Views: Labeling won't solve AI's problems, according to one media outlet.
