May 8: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is May 8, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced that the Senate’s AI policy roadmap, which will outline the chamber’s AI regulation strategy, will be released “in a few weeks.” Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Energy introduced the Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence for Science, Security and Technology (FASST) initiative, which will be focused on leveraging AI to tackle scientific challenges. In Connecticut, Governor Ned Lamont threatened to veto a wide-ranging AI regulation bill, effectively killing the legislation, and he urged the legislature to coordinate with other states on AI bills. Lastly, there is increasing concern both within and outside government over the need for critical minerals to support AI development, with China’s supply chain dominance further complicating the issue.

In this issue:

Washington in Focus: The Commerce Department is weighing methods for restricting China and Russia from accessing U.S.-based AI companies’ large language models to slow those countries’ domestic AI development.

Around the Nation: The Delaware House passed two AI regulation bills focused on guiding the responsible use of AI and addressing AI-related threats, respectively.

Across the Pond: A Heritage Foundation researcher criticized the EU and U.K.’s approach to AI, suggesting their focus on policing the technology will hamper its development.

Global Highlights: A UN official advocated for international regulation to curb the development of autonomous AI-based weapons with the potential to choose and strike targets without human guidance.

Outside Views: The American College of Radiology warned that insurance reimbursement issues are hindering the adoption of AI technology in the radiology industry.
