May 7: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is May 7, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: Dozens of AI research projects launched on Monday using computing infrastructure provided by the U.S. government’s National AI Research Resource. Meanwhile, U.S. diplomats made plans to meet their Chinese counterparts in Geneva later this month for arms control talks focused on the use of AI. In Connecticut, the Consumer Technology Association’s senior vice president warned an AI regulatory bill under consideration in state legislature could cripple small businesses in the state. Across the pond, a Bank of England official warned financial firms against using strategies created by AI “that seek to profit from stoking market instability.” Lastly, India is grappling with ethical dilemmas brought on by political hopefuls’ use of deepfake technology to feign the endorsements of deceased Indian political figures.

In this issue:

Washington in Focus: A poll conducted by the Artificial Intelligence Policy Institute, a pro-regulation AI think tank, shows Americans broadly favor the regulation of AI.

Around the Nation: The Colorado House of Representatives passed a bill that would allow the state’s facial recognition software task force to explore deeper use of AI.

Across the Pond: British autonomous vehicle startup Wayve raised more than $1 billion in funding from multiple sources, including Microsoft and NVIDIA.

Global Highlights: China and France reached a broad consensus on AI regulation on Monday, but China’s approach to regulating AI is still “evolving” as it tries to draft its own AI legislation.

Outside Views: OpenAI announced on Tuesday it is releasing a deepfake detector for testing by “a small group of disinformation researchers.”
