May 6: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is May 6, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, the U.S. has begun accepting applications for $285 million in federal funding for companies to establish a CHIPS Manufacturing institute that would develop “digital twins,” which are virtual representations of microprocessors used for testing purposes. This week, Secretary of State Antony Blinken will unveil the U.S. strategy for achieving global cybersecurity cooperation at the RSA cybersecurity conference in San Francisco. Last week, the U.S. Air Force Secretary flew in an AI-controlled F-16, marking “one of the biggest advances in military aviation” in recent history. Across the pond, the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society will gather for their Euro Convergence conference, where AI regulation will be at the top of the agenda. Finally, a report from Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology finds China is “likely the world leader” in many areas of AI research, though U.S. companies still lead in large language model processing.

In this issue:

Across the Pond: A U.K. House of Lords committee is demanding that AI market competition be “an explicit policy objective” for the government.
