Today is May 30, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced a new program to help measure the impacts of AI models “within societal contexts.” In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) warned against excessive regulation of the AI industry, while in Arizona, Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) signed legislation addressing deepfakes. Meanwhile, the Center for AI Safety argued voluntary commitments from AI companies to self-regulate are insufficient. Lastly, the Machine Intelligence Research Institute outlined a new communications strategy to advance its goal of stopping “the development of frontier AI systems worldwide.”
