Today is May 21, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced plans for “a global network of AI safety institutes,” which will involve allies including the U.K., Japan, and Canada. Across the pond, the European Council approved the EU’s AI Act, which will enter into force 20 days after the EU’s Official Journal publishes the law. Lastly, several advocacy organizations unhappy with Majority Leader Schumer’s new AI framework published a “shadow report” recommending alternative policy actions they believe would better protect the public from AI risks.
