May 16: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is May 16, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, the Biden Administration released guidelines intended to protect workers from AI used in the workplace. On Capitol Hill, three election-focused AI bills advanced out of the Senate Rules Committee, but two of the bills, which focused on regulating the use of AI in campaign ads, largely failed to draw Republican support. Meanwhile, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS) are developing legislation that “could be introduced early next week,” which would provide scholarships for students to study AI and quantum computing. In Colorado, Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser supports a wide-ranging AI governance bill passed by the state legislature, but Democratic Gov. Jared Polis is contemplating vetoing the bill.

  • Around the Nation: Advocates urge passage of New York bills on artificial intelligence accountability.
