Mar. 4: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is March 4, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-CA), co-chair of the newly established AI task force in the House, discussed the prospects of Congress passing AI legislation this year. Meanwhile, the Oregon Senate approved a bill that would regulate the use of AI in political ads. In India, the government issued a non-binding advisory asking “significant” tech companies to seek government approval ahead of releasing a new AI model. Lastly, a think tank leader argued that despite providing some exceptions for open-source models, the EU’s AI Act still creates regulatory complexity for open-source AI in Europe.

In this issue:

  • Washington in Focus: Ohio senator demands Google’s breakup amid Gemini image generator scrutiny.

  • Around the Nation: Maryland legislature considers online privacy bill that the AG says will need resources to be enforced.

  • Across the Pond: Europe’s chips research champion is cutting its China ties.

  • Global Highlights: Activists scrutinize Israel’s use of AI in Gaza.

  • Outside Views: Semafor suggests Google’s AI problems expose a deeper industry dilemma.
