June 6: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is June 6, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) struck a deal to split antitrust jurisdiction within the AI industry, with the FTC focusing on Microsoft and OpenAI and the DOJ responsible for Nvidia. Meanwhile, the FTC sent civil subpoenas to Microsoft and Inflection seeking information about their recent partnership and any steps the companies may have taken “to avoid a government antitrust review of the transaction.” Across the Pond, a data privacy organization filed complaints with data watchdogs in multiple EU states criticizing Meta’s plan to train AI models with user data from its social media platforms.

In this issue:

  • Washington in Focus: Treasury solicits ideas on how to manage ‘significant’ AI risks in finance.

  • Around the Nation: In North Carolina, lawmakers introduced new bills addressing AI, including the use of AI in political ads.

  • Across the Pond: Former Meta employees argue the EU should use its legal authority to hold social media companies responsible for how their algorithms promote election disinformation.

  • Global Highlights: Researchers for the Center for Data Innovation argue the U.S.-China AI dialogue would benefit from more stakeholders.

  • Outside Views: Signal's Meredith Whittaker argues AI is a privacy nightmare.
