July 8: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is July 8, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, the Senate Commerce Committee announced a hearing this Thursday focused on the impact of AI on privacy. The Republican National Committee’s platform committee approved a party platform that seeks to repeal President Biden’s AI executive order. Meanwhile, OpenAI plans to join BSA | The Software Alliance, a tech industry trade group. Across the pond, Politico profiled Peter Kyle, the new technology secretary for the newly Labour-led U.K. government. In the past, Kyle has proposed binding AI rules while also expressing support for tech innovation. Lastly, a poll by the AI Policy Institute suggests U.S. voters would prefer “a careful controlled approach” to AI development rather than a race to beat geopolitical adversaries at developing “extremely powerful AI.”
