July 11: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is July 11, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators introduced legislation that would set “transparency guidelines” for AI content and provide certain protections for creators and publishers using AI tools to generate content. Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers want the Biden Administration to provide more information about the partnership between Microsoft and G42, a United Arab Emirates-based AI developer with ties to China. A draft U.N. report proposes an international independent panel that would, among other things, evaluate “capabilities, opportunities, risk and uncertainties associated with AI.” Lastly, a professor criticized the “Little Tech Agenda” proposed by venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz.

In this issue:

  • Washington in Focus: A bill introduced in the U.S. Senate would advance AI research at the Department of Energy.

  • Around the Nation: Mall of America's new AI-fueled facial recognition tech sparks pushback.

  • Across the Pond: European Central Bank official calls for European AI strategy.

  • Global Highlights: A state-owned newspaper in China published an opinion piece calling for the “human-centric” development of the autonomous vehicle industry.
