Today is December 20, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators introduced a bill that would task a new office in the Department of Commerce with helping AI companies protect their frontier models from misuse by foreign adversaries. Meanwhile, as the White House considers easing environmental constraints to speed up data center construction, the U.S. Department of Energy warned AI data center energy demand could triple by 2028. In Massachusetts, Gov. Maura Healey (D) announced the launch of a new AI Hub aimed at driving “collaboration between government, industry, startups and academia.” Across the pond, Italy’s data privacy watchdog fined OpenAI 15 million euros for various privacy violations. A spokesperson for OpenAI suggested the regulator’s approach “undermines Italy’s AI ambitions.”
