Driving The Day

Today is December 18, 2023, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: The RAND Corporation, which Politico reports received millions in funding from tech billionaires concerned about existential risk, played a significant role helping the White House draft its AI executive order. In New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy (D) and Princeton University announced plans to launch an AI hub in the state. Meanwhile, a bill filed for introduction next year in the New Hampshire legislature would affirm the right to use autonomous AI for personal defense purposes. In Europe, key EU member states, including France and Germany, want to see the final text of the AI Act before they sign off on the deal reached by negotiators earlier this month.

  • Around the Nation: In Virginia, the General Assembly and Gov. Youngkin’s Administration are already working on AI policy.

  • Across the Pond: A national AI institute in the U.K. urges 'red lines' for generative AI.

  • Global Highlights: Chinese firms are looking to Malaysia for the assembly of high-end chips.
