Dec. 11: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report
Driving The Day
Today is December 11, 2023, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: On Friday, EU policymakers reached an agreement on the AI Act. However, the deal still requires the approval of the European Parliament and Council and, even after approval, it will be two years before all of the Act’s provisions are officially applied. In the meantime, the EU wants AI developers to voluntarily self-regulate under a new AI Pact. Meanwhile, investment advisers report the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is asking questions about their use of AI, an information gathering process some believe could increase the likelihood of rule-making by the agency. The founding co-directors of a Stanford-based AI institute are calling for a “moonshot mentality” on AI, which they believe requires greater government involvement in the industry’s future.
