Aug 9: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is August 9, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: In Washington, DC, the Senate Commerce Committee passed a bill that would provide congressional authorization for the existing U.S. AI Safety Institute, create AI testbeds between federal agencies and the private sector, encourage international cooperation on AI innovation and standards with like-minded democracies, and promote “partnerships between government, business, civil society and academia.” Meanwhile, the president of SAG-AFTRA, which represents actors, journalists, and musical artists, expressed support for the NO FAKES Act, a federal bill that would address unauthorized digital replicas of performers. Across the pond, the U.K. government is touting its support for 98 AI projects around the country that will “improve productivity and public services.”
