Apr. 26: AI Policy and Stakeholder Tracking Report

Driving The Day

Today is April 26, 2024, and here are the key policymaker and stakeholder actions on AI you need to know: According to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the U.S. and China will hold talks “in the coming weeks” to discuss AI risks. Meanwhile, a new AI safety board housed in the Department of Homeland Security will include leaders from major AI developers, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman. The board will focus on “the secure use of artificial intelligence within U.S. critical infrastructure.” A Colorado bill focused on combatting algorithmic discrimination, modeled after Connecticut State Sen. James Maroney’s AI legislation, faces scrutiny from small business owners who argue the Colorado proposal would unfairly penalize them. Across the pond, the European Commission is drafting a voluntary plan that would ask AI developers to combat AI-related election threats. Lastly, a nurses association in California is protesting Kaiser Permanente’s use of AI, arguing the new technology “undermines their profession and puts patients at risk.”

In this issue:

  • Washington in Focus: Politico reports federal lawmakers are focusing on the use of AI in healthcare, though it’s not clear when AI legislation will move forward.

  • Around the Nation: A proposal that would regulate AI in political ads could get Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ signature “very soon.”

  • Across the Pond: Pope will attend G7 summit to discuss AI, Italy says.

  • Global Highlights: A professor in Japan argues the Kishida administration must formulate its own AI framework in order to take global AI leadership.

  • Outside Views: A think tank fellow questions whether AI regulations will truly make society safer.
